The poem " I felt a Funeral, in my Brain" by Emily Dickinson is a very interesting poem that has many of references to a funeral.
One could make a case with how she describes the scenes in the first 2 stanzas, “ treading- treading- till it seemed that Sense was breaking through-” and “ beating- beating- till I thought my Mind was going numb-”,that she has a terrible headache. But the sensible way to interpret this poem would be through what is given throughout the poem itself. And that would be that there is an actual funeral going on and Dickinson is there but, not completely comprehending what is going on around her. Sort of like she thinks she is dreaming, (that’s why it’s all happening in her head) then again knows shes not. Like she's in denial that she lost this person, maybe.
The ending of this poem was like the end of life as she knew it. It even states that “a Plank in Reason, broke” like this person's death hit her all at once and she had to accept it. With the very last line “And hit a World, at every plunge, And Finished knowing -then-” its as if life goes on, not the way she wants it to but, it does go on without this person.
