In Marianne Moore's poem "Silence", it talks about how superior people act the way they do and don't get close to people.
This poem compares superior people to cats, in the way that cats don't really care what is happening around them, they only care about what's best for them to stay on top. This poem uses a lot of similes regarding this matter, stating how like superior people, cats are "self-reliant". And how cats dont like everyone to be all up in their business so they "take their prey to privacy". It even slips in a vivid image of a cat with a mouse in its mouth with the "mouse's limp tail hanging like a shoelace".
Moore also states "the deepest feeling always shows itself in silence; not in silence, but restraint." This line shows how, for the most part, you can't really tell people how you feel, because some may take advantage of that since they see feelings as weaknesses. Also in the very last line "make my house your inn. Inns are not residences." This shows how he father didn't mind if you stayed for awhile as long as it wasn't permanent, because if it was then you would really get to know him and he didn't want that, he liked to be alone and not too close to any one person.
